The proposal was made during a meeting between Sakhalin Region Governor Alexander Khoroshavin and South Korean Vice-Minister of Knowledge Economy Kim Young Hak in Seoul.
“One of the most promising South Korean undertakings within the framework of the Green Development project is the use of liquid or gaseous coal to considerably reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” the press secretary of the Sakhalin Region governor, Alexei Bayandin, said.
Bayandin added that the Sakhalin Region governor had already given instructions to start designing alternative energy facilities in Sakhalin.
Kim also proposed that South Korea and the Sakhalin authorities set up a joint working group and prepare and sign a memorandum of bilateral cooperation.
The region’s participation in the project was also discussed between Khoroshavin and Korean First Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Shin Kak-soo.
