The poll, held by the Russian Public Opinion Research Centre, showed 60% of Russians think terrorist attacks most endanger their lives and 65% drug addiction.

Two terrorist attacks on the Moscow metro on March 29, which killed 40 people and injured over 100, are thought to the main reason for increased worry about terrorism. In 2002, terrorism was only seen as a threat by 29% of Russians who took part in the same poll.

Alcoholism, which usually comes second, took third place in the list of potential fatalities. Around 55% of Russians see it as a threat.

The poll showed that people worry less about pollution (33%,) crimes (28%,)the spread of AIDS (16%,) natural disasters (12%) and plane crashes (12%) than in 2002 ( 41%, 42%, 24%, 20% and 26% respectively.)

The percentage of respondents who see car accidents (33%) and smoking (14%) as a main threat has increased from 4% and 9% in 2002.

The poll was carried out on April 3 - 4 and by 1.6 thousand people
