A Soviet-made TU-154 carrying a top-level delegation to a ceremony for the anniversary of the Katyn massacre crashed in a wooded area as it attempted to land at an airport in the west of Russia in thick fog on Saturday morning, killing all 96 people on board.

Medvedev has declared Monday an official day of mourning for the crash victims.

The flag at the Polish Embassy is flying at half mast. The emblems and flags are decorated with black ribbons. The pavement near the building is covered with the flowers brought by Muscovites.

Many top Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, arrived at the embassy to pay tribute to the victims of the tragedy.

The coffin of Kaczynski arrived at the presidential palace in Warsaw on Sunday as tens of thousands of Poles lined the streets to pay their final respects.
