MOSCOW, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - Two Moscow police officers have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to extort a 1.5 million euro ($2.3 million) bribe from a bank in the Russian capital, investigators said on Monday. "Two suspects have been taken into custody," said Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Prosecutor General"s Office investigation committee. Although the Interior Ministry has not yet officially revealed the identities of the suspects, a law enforcement source said earlier that police majors Dmitry Tselyakov and Alexander Nosenko had attempted to extort 1.5 million euros from Inkredbank vice president Pyots Chuvilin. Chuvilin is also the general director of the Spartak Moscow hockey club. The two officers were detained at the beginning of last week and then formally arrested after a warrant had been issued by Moscow"s Basmanny District Court.

SUKHUMI, August 12 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow has no plans to redeploy its Black Sea Fleet warships from Ukraine to Abkhazia, the Russian defense minister said on Wednesday. Russia"s Black Sea Fleet uses a range of naval facilities in Ukraine"s Crimea, including the main base in Sevastopol, as part of a 1997 agreement under which Ukraine agreed to lease the bases to Russia until 2017. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko announced last summer that Ukraine would not extend the lease of the Sevastopol base beyond 2017, and urged the Russian fleet to start preparations for a withdrawal. "We will stay put in Sevastopol," Anatoly Serdyukov said in reply to a question from a reporter. He also said Moscow would not increase the number of troops either in Abkhazia or South Ossetia, which Russia recognized as independent last August after a five-day war with Georgia over the latter. Asked whether Russia was planning to increase its military presence in the two former Georgian republics, Serdyukov said, "No. Why? It is sufficient." Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who made a one-day visit to Abkhazia on Wednesday, said earlier in the week that Russia would allocate 15-16 billion rubles (over $465 million) in 2010 to strengthen Abkhazian borders, frontier troops and bases.

Jacques Rogge told journalists three years have already passed since the decision was taken to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia"s Black Sea resort of Sochi, and the ISO was satisfied with the progress made in preparations for the games.

The statement followed after the International Olympic Committee signed in Moscow a new sponsorship deal with the Visa payment network, extending their current partnership until 2020.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said in his turn that all Olympic facilities in Sochi would be ready in time.

"We have no grounds for pessimism or fears that something will not be done in time," he said, adding all preparations are expected to be completed long before the games.

In September, Russia"s Ministry of Regional Development said more than 1 trillion rubles ($34.1 billion) would be spent between 2009 and 2012 on the preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
